anyone ever try this concept rather than bulky Crab Pots ?
here's how it would work chunk of lead with line of crab snares every 30 feet apart or so and another weight at the end of line and of course a float above that.
would this be legal and how many crabs snares could a person use :smt001

I'm sure that would work very well...unsure on legality! We used to run 1000 foot trotlines for blue crab back on the Chesapeake. It was the best way to get numbers and a lot of fun.

It's an interesting idea.

Unfortunately as that method doesn't seem to meet the requirements of Section 29.80 I don't think its allowed.

29.80. GEAR RESTRICTIONS.
(a) General Provisions:
(1) Saltwater crustaceans may be taken by hand.
(2) Nets, traps or other appliances may not be used except as provided in this Section.

And in the section it allows:
1. Hoop Nets (A&B)
2. Crab Traps (subject to restrictions)
3. Crab loop traps - may have up to six loops

Since all the snares connected together would be considered one trap, then you'd be subject to a maximum of six loops overall, which would make it completely useless.
