My simple storage rack. It can stand on its own, but I recommend attaching it to a wall.

Materials
2- 8ft 4x4s
2- 4ft 2x4s
2- 4ft 1x4s
2- piece of ply wood 4ft x 24in x 3/4in thick
2- brackets used to attach 4x4s at 90deg(see pic below)
wood screws 2 1/2in

Cut the 4x4s down to 6ft. Use cut off pieces as feet.
Attach brackets with wood screws.
Use the ply and 1x4s to attach uprights together with wood screws.
plywood first, 1x4s over the top and bottom edges.
I use the piece of plywood and 1x4s cause it was the material i had on hand. It works well keeping the bottom rigid. You might just use a couple 4ft. 2x4 cross members at the bottom.
Measure the width of your kayak that will be on the bottom shelf and determine how high you need the top rack to be.
Attach 2x4 as cross member. This board will act like a cleat holding up arms.
Cut remaining 4ft 2x4 in half. Attach to the inside of uprights, resting on 2x4 cross member.
Attach plywood to arms to make work space when not holding kayaks. This piece of ply is optional as the arms can hold the boat just fine.

Good stuff. I plan to build something similar, but it'll be designed to hold my kayaks upside down on their rails (as Hobie recommends).

For now, I just use two sawhorses. The OK Scrambler XT sits on the floor underneath, and the Hobie is bottom up on the saw horses.
