Ocean Kayak Caper

I think he means that a great white shark would see a caper as a meal.....because it's shape and size would be similar to an elephant seal .....Scwafish = correct me if I'm wrong.

I fish out of an 11' Caper also. I took it out of Ft. Ross during 12' swells my first time out in the ocean. I've never had a problem with it.

The only complaint I have about it is since it's a shorter 'yak it doesn't handle "chop" too well. A longer 'yak is long enough to cover two choppy waves, but the shorter yaks go down the side of one wave and the next one will break over its bow. Not sure how much sense that makes, but it's what I experienced in a choppy Tomales Bay.

I think the 2 main downsides of the smaller yaks are lower weight capacity and speed (longer is faster).  Several of us fish kayaks under 15’ and do just fine.  One of the most impressive catches of last year was by a guy on a Tarpon 100 (2 huge stripers 20-25# and a salmon)...

While it might be true that shorter yaks get attacked by GWS more frequently than longer yaks, it is still rare and such a small occurrence that it might even be a coincidence.  Regardless, if this is a big concern, I’d suggest another hobby.

I'm sure we'll be out at Fort Ross on June 4th (the first week-end after the rockfish opener.) I Got two free camping nights with my Sonoma County Parks Pass so some buddys and I might even camp out that week-end.

Fish Friday afternoon, pack it up early, party it up at the camp site, then go first thing Saturday morning.

But putting on a cold wetsuit on a cold morning? Brrrrrr. I don't even like putting on wet, cold booties!

I hope you meant you'll be camping on July 4th weekend, because rockfish will still be closed to boat-based fishermen at Fort Ross until July 1st.
