Hi guys!  Anyone going to be at HMB old pier 9/20 AM?

My friend and I will be going out for our 2nd trip in our tandem Frontier 12 to explore and hopefully find a rockfish/ling cod honey hole.  The first time we went out we only went just beyond the harbor mouth and caught some croakers.  We'd like to venture further out to get rockfish and lingcod but could use some guidance.

I have a lowrance elite4 and could navigate to a general spot if anyone has a suggestion!  Thanks guys and hope to see some friendly faces out there!  Herb, maybe we'll see you?

If you look at the map on the Elite 4, you will see a few pinnacles on your way to the buoy(s).  Give those spots a try.  Watch the tides & turbulent water in/near those areas to be safe.

That's great advice, thanks!  When you say buoy, do you mean the one towards Mavericks?  Or the one due south of the harbor?

I've seen some guys paddle towards Mavericks but the waves look intense.

Hey bro, try the area between the 2 green cans farther out in 60ft of water. Last time we were out, we were catching some nice vermillion a in that area. Also, don't forget about the salmons. We will be there on Sunday. Good luck!
Oh and yes, DO NOT paddle towards mavericks from the jaws. I usually go towards the southern green can first then make a right.

If all goes right, I should be launching from the Old Pier before sunrise.  Going to try for the early morning salmon bite, then switch to rockfish near the red can.

Yes, definitely stay away from King's Rock and Mavericks for now... it's not worth the risk/trouble.

Conditions look very nice for tomorrow.  If I don't see ya at the beach, I'll be on Ch. 69.  See ya out there!

By all means ... post 'em up!  I don't get up to HMB that often so it's always good to see whats coming up from the depths these days.

Well the conditions for paddling could not have been more ideal!  Set out just before sunrise but the lowrance elite 4 was totally not working...  so we gave up on that and paddled to the green buoy south.  Saw a ton of birds diving over a baitball closer to miramar and tried to go check it out, but we couldn't paddle fast enough and it disappeared.  I overheard some salmon chatter on the radio but I think only undersize salmon was being caught?

Paddled over the the green buoy again and drifted 3-4 times before hooking up a ling just big enough to keep, 23".  It's the first one I've ever caught in CA!  My friend Christian hooked a rockfish but it came off just before I could get it in the net...  I won't make that mistake again!  Drifted for another hour but just hooked up baby rockfish and called it a day.

All in all not bad for the 3rd time out.  Hopefully will get the sonar to work next time so I can figure out what I'm actually fishing over!

Also met Mark before launching.  Any luck?  Thanks for the advice all, see you out there again

Congrats on the ling!  Right when you guys were leaving, I was getting skunked on keeper sized rockfish. I was catching and releasing tiny little blacks... so I don't count those.

A little while later, someone broadcast that they were having luck with salmon, west of the red can so I trolled over to where all the boats were.

I hooked up in 60 ft of water at about 40 pulls. It put up a decent fight, made a couple of good runs away from the yak, and then as we made eye contact after the last run, bastard spit the hook.

So... ended the day with skunk. But it was good to see so many NCKAers out on the water.

Oh, don't know if it matters, but after using a flasher the last 3 and a half times out, I decided to just go with a FBR behind my DeepDiver when I hooked up this time.
