I live near the Sacramento River north of Red Bluff, last three days there has been multiple reports of a 500 lb black bear hanging around. This morning talked to someone who ran across the bear yesterday, he told me he climbed a tree and waited for 30 minutes until bear left.

Not sure climbing the tree was best idea but seemed to work.

What would you do, I know DFG recommends making loud noises and backing away slowly

You might want to reconsider that tip about climbing trees. Black bears are great tree climbers. Check out this video of a black bear climbing up a tree next to a hunter's tree stand.

I would need a diaper change if I see a bear climb up the same tree that I'm on.

Haha yeah climbing a tree to get away from a black bear is probably the worst thing you could do. Death by lead poisoning is probably the best deterrent. If unarmed stand your ground and let them know you're there. Startle them when they're close and them might do something crazy but if you're a safe distance away and they sense you they will usually back off  :smt003

Carry a big caliber gun. He charges, you shoot.
