So, their rounding the corner through the Gate and heading east...

I have often wondered what would be the best access point to try hit salmon as they enter the Bay…  I've tried the point by the coast guard station, shore casting… it is a hot spot, but limited, and the biggest problem here or anywhere in the bay is hitting that "Run"…

But has anyone else given this some thought about where to launch and fish somewhere between I guess the Gate and and Angle Island to try and get some chrome before they hit the brackish water?

The other problem with this weather pattern is how windy the Bay is right now….

  Thoughts?

The only idea and spot I know if is California City, which is just around the corner from the Coast Guard Station and the mouth of Raccoon Straights. A few salmon have been already been caught there this month. My advice would be to launch from the Station and just head east around the corner. If you don't have much luck, just fish along the rock wall on the way back to catch a few rock fish.

I would echo what Chivo707 said, the Ft. Baker Coast Guard station is probably your best bet.  It's too bad their isn't a more viable launch in downtown Tiburon, although there is actually a small beach labeled "Public Shore" in front of the last building along Main Street near the entrance to the Corinthian Yacht club.  The actual access is pretty poor however, as you'd need to park in the downtown lot and sling your yak over a railing as I recall.  The beach I'm thinking of is the one where the Tiburon Mile swim race ends,

agreed,

I with ya that the most burly water would be out of fort baker, have to watch the tide and current…  I have fished that point front he shore, it's pretty intense and looks like a productive area…  it's the first sharp left the salmon can take once through the gate, an it's deep water right near the shoreline there...

Don, the only place I know of is California City. As I understand, it's right off the net depot. Launch at Paradise and go to the right past "the NCKA clubhouse" The water is 50'+ there. They say right at the high tide and the hour on either side is the time to hit it. They stage there for a brief time before heading up. They probably start smelling the sweet water coming down from San Pablo from there. I've seen them trolling around there before. Never tried it, just watched it.

In the SF Bay is is a good idea to buy one of the tidal flow charts for the bay. It will provide the current in knots for different locations at peak and a couple hours before and after peak tidal flow. For example there is nearly double the current during an ebb tide at Raccoon Straight as there is on the opposite side of Angel Island.

There is a lot of water flowing in and out and the result is currents of nearly 6 knots at some locations. It helps to know when and where the current will be the strongest and plan accordingly.

Max flood current is going to be less than max ebb (where there are multiple bays draining out through the GG) but it can still be close to 2 knots at the Raccoon Strait area.

Check the predicted current by time for the SF Bay and you will get a good idea of good times to be out there with a kayak. Sometimes the best course of action is to drop anchor and wait it out.
