Years ago when I was the VP of the Fresno Fly- Fishers, I tried to get Al Whitehurst to come and do a show for us, he politly refused. Now Al Whitehurst is the fellow that set most of those fly-fishing records in the Forebay and the big lake. As I recall he said he caught most of those fish on a 3/0 Deceiver, yellow top, white bottom and they were caught subsurface on a 5 wt rod.
Why Do I paddle a kayak instead of a float tube or a pontoon boat? I like seeing where I'm going not where I've been!
Paddle safe and wrap'em tight.

Allow me to correct my self . The records were set not only on the Forebay but more so the San Luie as well, and Al Whitehurst never said which ones he caught on a 5wt. A fishermen of his Caliber could have done all the tippets up to 6-lb on a 5wt  while they could've been just as well on a 5wt ,I honestly don't know about all the others.I  also went and checked the records. Here  they are .
29 lbs  8oz   2- lb Tippet        San Luis.  AL Whitehurst
32 lbs 12 oz  4-lb Tippet         San Luis. Al
38 lbs           6- lb Tippet       San Luis. Lenoard Bearden Jr
39 lbs  8 oz   8-lb Tippet        O'Neill Forebay. Al
54 lbs  8oz    16- lb Tippet      O'Neill Forebay. Al
49 lb             20 lb Tippet       San Luis.   Lenoard  again.

Hey Frank,
It was an absolute ball! I'm gonna land that sucker some day!! I was using a 1/2 oz. (about 3in. long) green Croc w/ the red plastic tag near the hook.

BTW The second one I didn't land (On Sat 10/7) was on a Megabass Vision one ten. It's a pricey Japanese lure I got from my Japanese in-laws, but man does it attract the fish! Tackle Tour has a great write up on them. http://www.tackletour.com/reviewmegabassvision110.html
