I was in Shelter Cove... What better place to break in a new kayak...RTM Disco from Spike... light and fairly fast... and as Hydrospider said... has a twitch you must respect.  I knew all this going in and I love the boat...however there were some things I should have done before I took it out to fish.  I should have practiced self rescue with this boat.   I ended up swimming when forgot about my troll rod.   I had pulled up and was talking to Matt on his Stealth.   The lure snagged on the bottom and became an anchor connected to an 8 1/2 foot lever sitting in my rod holder.  When the right swell came along... I was a swimmer.  Normally not a problem in  my old boat .... but that day ... for what ever reason...  I couldn't seem to get back aboard ("... respect the twitch..." ).   Matt was right there and helped me back aboard.  ...Thx Matt... I owe you...    The plan was to fish  my way down the coast...but I could not justify fishing if I couldn't self rescue.  So I just went home.  And the day after I got home... I was in Morro Bay with everything I had that day except the net and the rod.  I practiced self rescue.   I climbed aboard like a seal... I used my game clip like a stirrup and climbed aboard and the standard ...drag your self over the side...    I can go fishing again... :smt001...of course now I gotta go surf this boat.   1. Don't forget about your fishing rod.  2. Practice several ways to get back aboard ...just in case. 3. Try not to fish alone.   Be safe out there guys.

Peace,

LP

Thank for sharing your experience LP.  Glad you're practicing self-rescue afterward and now able to "climbed aboard like a seal"  :smt003

You owe me nothing. Just glad to give a hand. Glad it all worked out.

Great lesson and well represented - I know the feeling exactly.   :smt002

I'm curious, how does someone in a yak assist someone else to reenter their own yak?  Hold their yak steady?  Until I practiced enough times on the T13 my biggest challenge was keeping it horizontal while trying to reenter.  It kept going vertical on its side because I wasn't prone enough and kicking enough.
