Which Hawaii Island

As I am planning our vacation next year, I am curious which island has a good spot to rent and go fishing.

Check out aquahunters. They have a member on our board that has a YouTube page that I can't remember now but when I find it I will let you know. I have only dove there, never hook and line. I would think Maui would be a good island they have kayak rentals all over. There is a good fishing store north of lahaina called truth, lies, bait and tackle that rents gear. Cool people plus they have a diving section in there. Kehei comes to mind for kayaks.

Went to the Big Island of Hawaii last year. I went scuba diving with Sandwich Isle Divers and ended up going fishing with them, too.

I caught some Wahoo and caught (and released) a 12" ft Marlin. Epic trip. 

When you time it right, fishing is excellent. Had a friend who went 3 weeks later and ended up getting a nice half day boat ride.

Check out Crgslist and VRBO.com for condos as they would be your best deals. We stayed at a friend's condo.

ps. robNtay808 is from the Big Island of Hawaii. If you want to kayak fish in the Big Island, you dont have to go far from shore to catch wahoo, tuna, mahi-mahim, etc.

Big Island, Kona has some big fish relatively close to shore.  I can't say to kayak fishing there.

I fished out of Kona last month. Plenty pupule has rentals and all the tackle you need. Snorkeling was great, lots of reef fish if you want to shoot something. I chased pelagics for no luck, but did see tiger sharks, turtles and all kinds of other cool stuff.

No fishing license required. The locals can be dicks. The charters don't let you keep your own fish - they sell your fish to the market and charge you for the privilege. It's kinda weird there.

Just spent 10 days on Maui...I mostly shore fished with so so luck...mostly family vacation. The locals were fishing for I believe it's called Ono. They were setting up anywhere from 6 to 15 poles fanned out in all directions... Big gear shore fishing....using a kayak to run the lines out 200 -300 yards off shore and then posting up almost all weekend (2-3 days)....this was going on everywhere. I believe it's real hit or miss depending on what's running near shore. No license required...as many rods as you want...you can camp on the beach without permit as long as you are fishing

Here's what I brought home. It was an epic day off the coast of Kona.
Best way is to befriend a local and have them show you the ropes.
Some of the locals I spoke to know some kayakers catching tuna , wahoo and mahi-mahi, etc.

They were probably slide baiting for Ulua or dunking for Oio. Ono are what P-Sherman is holding and they are caught trolling in 150-300 FOW. If you want to kayak fish and maybe catch pelagics, I would hire a guide. You can go solo but you need heavy tackle if you want to catch ono or ahi and then you have to learn how to rig an opelu and where and when to fish. Then there is the wind and current issues. You can try and hookup with locals but they are not always open to that. As far as which island to kayak fish, the Big Island would be my pick but any of the islands are good. A good place on the Big Island would be Honaunau next to the place of refuge. South Point is good too but the wind and current can be brutal. If you go to the Big Island, PM Andy1976. Bring a light to medium spinning rig for whipping the reef. Papio are crazy fun on light tackle. Bring a bag of gulp 1" peeler crabs and grubs. They work great on the reef fish. I wouldn't eat them though although some of the locals do.

Some charters let you keep some of the fish, but yeah you are correct it is weird. They kill marlin too. I used to fish the islands every year. Now I fish baja.

Great bass, do you drive to Baja? My friends from Mexico say not to drive, too dangerous, even for them. I wonder how things really are.
