I started this today.  The wood is old reclaimed heart redwood.  I think it is from a water tower. I started by resawing the 2.5" x 6" down and surfacing two sides.  I ended up with two 1 x 6.

I am looking for design recommendations.  Has anyone made one of these?  What would you use for the ruler?  Any construction tips?  What type of joint for the stop to base piece?

Much thanks.

I use a tablesaw to rip the wood lengthwise to create the trough.

1x6 may be a bit skinny.

Ruler:  carefully mark your inches on each side, going up from base (I start at 12"), then connect them with a deep scrape into the redwood.  There's no turning back once you start gouging the redwood, so be sure of your marks.

Stop to base joint:  I thought to join it with a complex cut, but it works fine just butted up and screwed deep.

Have fun.   :smt001

Pretty sweet!!! Being a third gen logger...I love heart of redwood...I've been on jobs where in the 1800's they left chunks laying around, where I would slice off each end...pure wood on the inside!!! Were talking some 6-9' even larger through!!! 42" bar and a 60" cannon bar dir the big dogs...

But to convert them into what your doing...i just put um on the ground!!! (Used to)

Great work would love to win it!!!

I'm at about the same stage as seachumm, ...slab is cut & hollowed, just need to put the endpiece on and burn the decoration & measurements.

With the triple digit temps persisting in my neck of the woods, getting out to the garage is not first on my list.  Especially when there is cooler, foggier, and far more fishy weather to be had on our beautiful coast.  That said, I dedicated a bit of time today to this long over due project.

As I made the first cut, I could smell the red wine in the saw dust.  Stong, sweet and old like fine Cabernet….this wood is definitely an old wine cask and not a water tower.  That would explain the dark stained color of the wood.  I ripped two strips to width after cutting them to rough length and cut a bevel on the table saw before the sweat was dripping and I called it for the day.

Stay tuned- I'm feeling inspired.
