We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) wants to remind anglers that recreational fishing for Pacific halibut (Hippoglossus stenolepis) is closed for the month of August. The season will reopen on Sept. 1 and run through Oct. 31.

When the season reopens, both the daily bag and possession limit of Pacific halibut will be one fish, with no minimum size limit.

Pacific halibut fishing regulations are developed through a collaborative regulatory process involving CDFW, the Pacific Fishery Management Council, the National Marine Fisheries Service, the California Fish and Game Commission, the International Pacific Halibut Commission and other West Coast states. For details regarding Pacific halibut management, please visit the CDFW website.

To be clear...  The halibut that we all catch are California Halibut (at least in SF to Monterey) and not affected by this closure right?

Mostly, yes. The second page of the saltwater regs has a nice picture showing how to tell them apart: https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=77722&inline=true

It looks like some of the entries in AOTY were misidentified.

Nope - up until 2-3 years ago we had only one category for halibut that included california and pacific.  When they were split into separate catgeories a few of the older pac-butt entries just didn't get moved into the new category that was created for pac-butts.

Pacifics are on the chew.  I picked a up 20lb chicken at the Cove today by power boat.  A power boater caught and 80lber yesterday in Eureka trolling on the bottom for salmon in 150ft of water.
