What's up, NCKA?

I'll be spending a week on Maui this August, and I'm curious about my options for wetting a line while I'm out there...

Have any of you fished around Maui?

Know of any spots that offer kayak fishing opportunities? (Would have to rent everything, but might bring a reel or two since I fish lefty)

Any recommended boat trips/charters?

Thanks for any pointers!

Cheers,

Alex

Hi Alex:

There's some useful hits off the search function.   see http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=33098.0
A met a cabby that suggested reef whipping for Moi fish.

Also, see if you can get a hold of aquahunters, or JTF (who lives there now).  all bros.

Bring a spinning rig 8-15# and whip the reef with small lures for papio or soak some gulp baits for oio and other reef fish. The small gulp peeler crabs are the bomb on reef fish and the 1-2" gulp grubs work great behind a Hawaian popping bobber. Gulp baits havent caught on over there so buy some before you go. Use the same gear and rigging as you do for surf perch. If you want to hunt ulua, the area south and north of Napili is good but you will need heavy tackle and fishing is better at night. Kind of like cat fishing on steroids.  :smt005 PM JTF, I think John is crewing on charter boats. I went on a 6 pack out of Kaanapali and it sucked.  If you rent a kayak, don't dangle your feet in the water.  :smt011 I have done well on small ulua to 15# on Maui from shore. Personally, I CNR all reef fish because of the neurotoxin issues but the locals eat them.  :smt010

get a cheap plastic gun case from Walmart or K-Mart and put your rod/reel in that for shipping on the checked bags.
A case like this will hold two rod/reels for $16
http://www.amazon.com/Plano-Protector-Single-Rifle-Shotgun/dp/B000P3WQ0Y/ref=sr_1_257?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1404521496&sr=1-257&keywords=plastic+gun+case

Or, you could just pick up a cheap rod/reel at Walmart and hand it off to a local kid when you leave.

No license is required to fish saltwater on Maui or anywhere in Hawaii.
