I would like to paddle from Usal Beach to little Jackass campground. I would like to fish and hike for the week and then paddle back after about 3 days of camping. I have other friends meeting me at the campground who are hiking in. I would like somebody to paddle and fish with me for safety.

I hate to agree with matanaska but that area is remote and when I have camped there rough as heck. If you do go (and live) :) please post up and give a report it will be a first from that launch.

Cheers,

I've always wanted to do a trip up that way, but the stars (conditions and personal schedule) have never aligned. Be safe whatever you do. Don't be afraid to bail out.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

Is there a decent road in there now? My friend's dad ran a night smelt camp off that beach to supply west coast aquariums, probably one of the last land-based commercial fishing operations

Used to need either 4wd or vw bug and some serious driving skills to get in there

Sounds like a nice adventure

I've done that trip.  It's takes about 2 hours.  Really pretty.  The hardest part is coming back in at Usal beach, because it's got steep beachbreak.  That area is generally a little calmer than other areas to the north or south due to the fact that it faces south west.  It's protected from the wind and waves a little.

The thing that scared me on that trip were the sea lions.  They don't see humans on little boats up there very often, and the big grumpy males get nasty.  I had one following me right behind my boat for about 15 minutes, just barking his head off at me.  The whole time I'm yelling back at him that I don't want his females--just let me outa there!  My paddling partners were laughing their heads off.  They don't do anything, but they scare the crap out of you.

Good luck, its a fun trip.  The great thing is you can bring a bunch of stuff that the backpackers would never want to carry.

I love that place. Me and some buddies have been doing a trip there for the last 10 years. As Dave said the beach is wicked and you need to be on your game coming in cause you will get crushed. The fishing near Jackass is awesome and the crabbing straight out is pretty good. I've always wanted to try for halibut off the beach but never have. Looking forward to the report.
