Anybody try drifting the Petaluma river towards black point from Petaluma during low tide , then drift back @ high tide? Thinking of going for striped bass.

Sounds like fun, when you plan on going?  I've never done it and never heard of anyone doing it.
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

What about shuttling a car to Blackpoint and doing a one way it looks like about 12 miles maybe even start at the Marina where Papa's used to be. Wonder what the current speed is on the outgo?
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

I've seen people on kayaks at the split bridge before, you could launch at the black point marina or you could launch from the opposite side where the baitshop use to be.  Plenty of parking, and its free as long as you do a quick launch and park outside. I watched a Youtube Vid about launching from downtown Petaluma... its not worth the hassle to start there..probably the same amount of current as the Napa river, but its probably smart to stay on the shallow side m when going under bridges..

I think its well worth a try. Rather than starting in Petaluma, if possible, I'd suggest starting closer to the bay on a low tide and then drift upstream toward Petaluma and eventually ride the outgoing back downstream. From what I understand about the most productive areas in the river, its better to concentrate your time on the Black Point side rather than Petaluma.

As far as currents, I regularly do the same kind of drift on the Napa River (Kennedy Park on the outgoing, drift/paddle down past Cuttings Wharf and then ride the incoming back) and I've never been in a current that made me even mildly nervous. Using my GPS, I've rarely drift faster than 2.5mph even on an outgoing. The main river wont be the problem though - its the side channels and sloughs that you need to be wary of, especially if you're trying to paddle into a slough on an outgoing tide because the current can be deceptively swift and irregular.
