This is just to follow up on my "hypothetical" whether one could come up with a working reel if you went to Alan Tani's workshop with a bag of parts and schematic. After he gave me confidence and sent me on my way, and about 8 hours of fiddling in three sessions, I finally got it together, and it's now a real reel!  Right up to the end I was afraid I might have lost a part, and by God, they are all critical.

A Shakespeare Tidewater 30L that came as part of an Ugly Stick 8 ft salmon rod combo for about $70.  I rinsed it in a ankle -high wave at the beach.  Cheaper to buy another than to have someone else take it apart, but I learned a lot of lessons about reel repair in the process, so I'm more likely to buy a better reel in the future.  With the new drag washers, the drag adjusts much more smoothly so I'll save it for salmon.
