After reading about the effectiveness of wood body striper plugs made by this company called "Delta Wooden Bombers" i looked into purchasing some.l I found out that they can be hard to come by since they are all handmade in limited production, and thus not suprisingly fairly expensive...$50 per plug and up depending on the size. (3.5-5'' i think) Since i am on summer break and have some extra time, and because i enjoy a good DIY project, i decided to try my hand at building a few wooden plugs. After a little shopping for materials; Alaskan Yellow Cedar, primer, clear coat, metallic sliver and clear gliiter spray paints, and some 220 griot wet sandpaper...i was ready to begin construction. i can describe my process if anybody is interested, so far i have finished one 3.5'' plug painted like a frog, a 6'' plug painted silver/glitter, a jointed silver/glitter 6'' lure that i have to test and see if it even works plus add a diving lip to, and a large lyman style plug for Mackinaw that is painted to look like a kokanee. All of the others are intended to be used for oversized striper in the delta.

The guy behind DWB (Carlo) is really talented with the airbrush. His stuff is hand crafted art and he spends enough time on the water to know what shapes kill. You will be pumped when you get your first blowup on one of your own plugs. Are you through wire with all of your hardware?

Yea, pretty heavy gauge too, I think they will hold up gainsy time and hopefully a few good sized fish.  :smt001

These things are worth every penny. DWBs are made local by a cool dude, and the way they walk compared to others is amazing.

There is a guy on another forum that makes custom top water lures for Stripers:

I bought the two on the left but did not get a chance to try them this spring.

Damn fine craftsmanship, mine look a bit hokey by comparison. Thankfully I have a lot of wood left to practice with. Hands need a break though, the drill is the only power tool I am using an the hand planing/whittling has taken its toll!

The fish won't be judging how well the lures are crafted, I bet your lures will hammer the fish!
What kind of wood are you using?

Kudos on your creativity and sense of adventure ! Nice work. Unfortunately, now you have my brain/curiosity working and I'll no doubt be trying my hand at this down the line.

Alaskan yellow cedar. I got a 5' x 6" x 2" piece which will give me plenty of wood to work with.

Great looking lures dude and not bad for your first try. I bet the fish will love them. If I tried to do them I'd probably loose a finger or two. I'm a clutz with a knife when carving wood, but not in the kitchen.
