Crabbing at Van Damme?

Folks - heading up to Van Damme/Mendo for 5 days of fishing/camping, was debating bringing a crab pot or two (kayak). The front kiosk ranger had mentioned a few years ago that a commercial boat does drop somewhere out there... was wondering if anyone has had any luck within a few miles out of the beach/cove. Will it be a waste of energy or is there hope? Thanks!!!
