My favorite Shimano Sahara spinning reel finally bit the dust.  It seized up and when I opened it, the gears were caked with corrosion and completely wasted.  If the gears had been brass or stainless steel, they would have likely been salvageable.

Now, I'm looking to step up to something more saltwater resistant.  I'm looking for something versatile that's heavy duty enough for big stripers, yet light enough for perching.

Does anybody here have any experience with these Quantum Boca reels?

Wow I am looking for the same thing, my Sahara is about to bite the dust. I have heard Okuma makes nice spinning gear (no it is not a plug) but I am totally clueless when it comes to spinning gear.

Quantum is making some nice stuff these days... I've been eyeballing the Cabo PT spinning reel for a while.  Looks like a great value and a quality reel.

I have a Penn Slammer 360 spinning reel and would recommend it as well.  VERY sturdy construction... definitely built to last... good drag system, etc.

Hmmm ... note to self, check my Sahara this winter when going over the reels!  It must be a pretty good little reel if we all have it.  Mine has lasted for 3 years so far without any problems.

I have an Okuma Epixor EF30.  For the price ($55.00) it is hands down the best spinning reel out there.

10 ball bearings, super smooth.  Slightly cheesy plastic sections on the body and the pain on these sections has peeled but I've had it for 3.5 years and it has performed in salt and fresh very well.

shimano makes a reel rated for salt for about $70.  the spheros.

In a weak fiscal moment in the dark of winter
I bought the 3000 model from ebay and spooled it with 8lb berkeley xt
and put it on an 8.5 steelhead rod for perching.  it is a bit like taking the jag to the 7-eleven
for a slurpee, but hey, what is wrong with that?

the drag is "sealed", but I would put a ton more grease in it. the drag washers are greased felt. three or four of them, I posted a little faux-tani write up one time. you can probably search for 'spheros".

have fun chuck. daiwa makes some nice spinners, like the famed black and gold, maybe you should
match your daiwa conventional with daiwa spinning.

The Okuma is also sealed drag with 3 oiled felt drag washers.

If I didn't own the Okumas, I would own shimano.  I buy shimano products unless there is a very compelling reason not to (like how good and cheap the okumas were).
