Looking for a fix on how to eliminate the noise transfer from the Kayak above rack into the cabin of the SUV? I'm thinking its the straps causing the drum like noise from the space between the kayak and the tie down frame where the flat straps are combined together. I've heard from one other to twist the flat straps then tighten. Their is no other cable on the kayak deck that already not removed. I'll put them back if I can find a solution to the noise level inside. I Want to meet our members at the GS8 on Friday. I wish my schedule allowed me to sign up for the event but that changed so will travel the 6.5 hours to meet as many of you as I can and to pick up the net I ordered also. I just might have to load it inside my SUV like usual if no solution can be found. Thanks

Put two twists in the strap where it catches air... Noise gone...
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

+1   Best advise I received... a few twists in the straps will quiet things down.  Also, some padding on your crossbars (if you don't have any already) should help cancel out vibration/droning.

Thanks very much for the quick response. I'll give them a twist. The kayak rest on rubber mounts then onto the cross bar.

Yes on the twists of the straps.  Make sure there is at least 1 (twist) on each side of the yak.

Also try both bow forward and stern forward.  Not only for best noise, but for best gas mileage.  On some kayaks, I've seen as much as 10% better gas mileage with stern forward.

Yes, those straps do vibrate like guitar strings. I want to get the straps as tight as I can so I don't twist.  I use tie wraps or electrical tape. During the season when I'm fishing every other weekend I just wrap the straps around the crossbars. Saves time getting ready on the next trip. On long trips I've also put tape over the scupper holes. Seems to help.

Thanks everyone for your help. Twisting the straps cured the noise.

Wrapping some rope around the crossbars will kill the whistle the bars make

+1   And the difference between deck down versus deck up was noticeable in noise and fuel.
