If you are not already fishing on Saturday morning, the California Coastal Commission is sposoring Coasta Cleanup Day Saturday September 16, 2006 http://www.coastal.ca.gov/publiced/ccd/ccd.html .  This occurs on most beaches in the state from 9 am to noon.  Specific locations are listed on the web site.  Basically, you show up, sign a waver, pickup a list, pencil and trash bags and gloves if you want and start picking up trash.  The list is to document the types of trash that are picked up.

I have done this over the past several years and while it may not sound like it, it is a realy fun program.  Usually there are lots of volenteers including scouts and school groups etc.  They usually also have corporate sposors that offer lunch and drinks for the participants at the signup area.  I like to participate at the beach closest to my house and I always leave the event tired and satisfied for doing a good deed for the community and marine environment.

It may sound corny but this is worthwhile feel good event.  It is easy to participate and only takes a little time.  If you have time I encourage you to participate at a location near you.

Just watch out, cleaning beaches is habit-forming!  You'll find yourself putting an garbage bag in your trunk to pick up at some of the out of the way launches, as well as picking paper plates, deflated balloons and Frisbees out of the kelp mats as you come in from fishing.

No joke Tom.  I can not remember a time that I did not return from an outing, fishing or otherwise, where I did not pick up at least one piece of trash.  While it can be habit forming, it feels a lot better and is signficantly cheaper than some other potentially habbit forming activities  :smt002 .

Wow, nearly every county has some beach for clean up.  Lake Tahoe has some and even Imperial County and the Salton Sea has a beach cleanup target.  Monterey county has six beaches designated.

How about getting a group together - to fish in the morning and then do a beach clean-up after and then BBQ  :smt045

I wouldn't mind driving to Monterey and make a day out of it  :smt001

The official Coastal Commission event is in the morning (9-noon) and usually includes some sort of refreshment or lunch, at least at the main locations.  I like your idea though Mooch and will probaly try to follow that format if and when NCKA adopts a beach (meet early, fish, BBQ and cleanup the beach after).  With the major cleanup event occuring in the morning this Saturday, the beaches should look pretty good by the time you get in from fishing.  But do not let me discourage you.  I am sure that there will still be litter somewhere to cleanup after fishing and I completely understand the urge/need to get on the water after a long week driving a desk.

Hiya Mooch,

Randy wants to do Lover's Point in the morning.  We are up for a pre-dawn launch and an early off.  We should be there at 6am.  I've registered us with the clean up folks......... :smt003

Hi Pat, would love to join you guys but I got a date  :smt008 with Art on his boat this Saturday. I was hoping we could get another clean-up date and hopefully get more NCKA'ers to participate  :smt001

no Albacore - just somewhere close by, I'm hoping for the Bay instead of the Ocean - but that's up to the "El Capitan" Papa Bill and his Dad will be part of the crew as well. I've always wanted to fish with Pennington Senior....his accent   :cowboy_smoke:   kills me  :smt005

Good luck you guys!

I did my part for the Coastal Clean Up.  Our crew met in Emeryville and we picked up stuff all around the Powell St. area and around ShoreBird Park.  Sad to say that my daughter and I picked up lots of shotgun wads and empty cases as well as the usual Star Bucks cups and candy wrappers.  I know where not to go at night.
My goal in life is to be as good of a person my dog already thinks I am.
