See the last item...These lakes are the Loch Lomond Res. of the North Bay and would be a fantastic spot to kayak fish.  If they get this program going here, how about Crystal Springs next!

That would be great. I love fishing those lakes in Late February/Early March. The shore fishing is exceptional (if you know where to look). I've dreamed of being able to take a boat out there....all those fish in the low pressure areas won't know what hit em.

That would be cool! I used ride my mountain bike along Mount Tam and always wondered what the fishing was like. Let's hope they legalize kayaks and canoes in these lakes. It really seems like a waste if we can't enjoy being ON THE WATER. I mean, come on..... who wants to be stuck on the shoreline  :smt009

Keep us posted - thanks!  :smt023

One of these days, I'll paddle and fish Lake Merced - hell, I don't even know if they still allow any type of launching in the North and South Lake. Does anyone have info on this? I dropped by there two weeks ago and saw a Russian dude catch 2 pan fry trout from the wooden pier right across the launch ramp.

There are lots of 10-12" trout stocked late Fall through early Spring in Bon Tempe, and last year they had a few plants of larger ones.  Alpine has lots of bass - my brother in law pulls some big ones out of there.  And you can't beat the surroundings.  Keepin' the fingers crossed...

Mooch,

Lake Merced is a hidden treasure for bass fisherman. Since most people are dunking bait for trout, the bass got huge. It's not uncommon to catch five pounders there on a regular basis. Couple of weeks ago, a guy was flipping jigs into the tules off the boat dock and nailed an eight pounder. A couple of guys take there kayaks out and hit the other lakes that you can't reach by foot.  They do very well.

The fishing is absolutely free for the time being and the lake is stocked regularly with trout. I personally would not eat anything out of that lake. If you see all the trash, you would understand.

I've heard that the city is trying to find someone to take over the main boat house, which is in severe disrepair. When that is done, expect the lake to make a comeback. I hope that this lake becomes a destination for families again. It's where I learned about fishing and where a lot of inner city youth come to learn as well.

When I finally get rigged up, lets hit it.

Good info / Thanks Omar! I hear you about the bass, I've never fished for them before (cause I was trout guy at the time) but I can now see the potential of lunker bass in these waters. Like you said - I'd release ANYTHING caught in Lake Merced, the trash situation is really SAD  :smt009

Get your yak ! Would love to fish this lake again - and I like the fact that it's an easy drive  :smt002

Too funny. I went to SF State for undergrad. I used to run around that lake for exercise when I lived as a student in Park Merced never thinking about fishing. LOL. What a homecoming for me to fish it.
