Back in the Philippine Islands, my dad's good friend died the same way. He was known to spear Groupers the size of a Volkswagen bug (I never saw pics - but my dad said he was credible)

Any mention anywhere of whether or not the diver was packing a dive knife?

A dive knife is a must for me after being tangled in the kelp in Timber cove and nearly shallow water black out after freeing myself. Freaky stuff...with out the knife I may not have came up at all!  :smt005

Saltwater is the cure for everything that ails us,

It appears that the jewfish (goliath groupers) are over-populated and can get aggressive.
Truth will never be known if he acted in self-defense, mis-identification or poaching. But he doesn't deserve to die regardless. It's a tragedy. Always carry a knife, always!
