Chef,

Hope you are recovering well, soon maybe you'll be able to hit up some nice SD fishing spots. I know of the following:

La Jolla Shores , beach launch - YT , WSB , halibut

La Jolla, south of la jolla cove , south end of cove is the reserve boundary , launch from the beach just south of the cove north of the childrens pool (seal poop beach now) there are really long kelp beds offshore and the depth is like 35-45 feet deep, freedivers often go here for WSB and Yellowtail. - same fish as above, do this place early since its touristy and the winds come up some stairs to go down.

Point Loma Kelp Beds, work area between Point Loma towards the pier. The kelp is a lot like the kep you find around Capitola. - paddle out of shelter island launch ramp - WSB

Shelter Island area - drifting bait past the sea lions on the docks , you'll see the naval yards near there and their "warning" signs, get too close and the guy in the patrol boat will tell you to move.  - for sand bass., the beauty of the shelter island launch is that if you are feeling at all lazy you can paddle out of the launch area and just start bouncing stuff off the bottom and hook up with bass. when i was there i did a little snorkeling to see the bottom terrain and there was just bass sitting everywhere. amazing to see.

you can hook up with some folks at the San Diego Buddy Board if you want to do some boat fishing:

You can park free at shelter island launch but make sure you secure your car, i disconnect a battery terminal since cars and trucks of all shapes and sizes get stolen daily.

i used to live in Ocean Beach or Rue D'Orleans and worked at a bike shop in University City. i wish i had a kayak then as i would have stayed there even longer.

if you feel like doing a fishing trip for YT on a panga down in baja for the day you can hit up Dale's dive shop at the bufadora. My wife and I drove down there forthe day 2 years ago to do some spearfishing off the boat. it was 65.00 all day with a panguero. Dale is a super nice guy. You'll be able to fish the football stadium size kelp beds of punta banda and at the tip of the point you can cast for YTs. I also freedived this spot and saw everything from barracuda to BSB and big Sheephead. Lots of large calicos and gillnets! doh! real fishy places.

Drive was like 2.5 hours each way , not too bad. We stayed off Rosecrans / Hwy 8 on that trip to SD.

Also, for So Cal kayak fishing I am sure the folks at BWE will be more than happy to offer advice:
