Help with construction permits

I am moving forward with a steel building that I will permit but have an old 18x21 carport on the property that is unpermitted. It may have been constructed before permits were required for such things in my county but I have no way of knowing. When I due the site plans, should I include this structure? Will inspectors make tear down before approving new structure? I am in an agriculture zone if that matters. Do they inspect slabs and prefab steel buildings? If no inspection is needed should I leave off the carport? I can't figure out if inspections are required for prefab.

Great questions.  Is it attached to the house?  Does it have power?

Not attached. No power. Over 1000' from propery lines and 500' from other structures.

Don't sweat it. If it is an exsisting structure in an ag zone, they dont give a damn.Especially if it has no power or plumbing. Put it in the drawings, don't put it in the drawings, it wont matter. You have much bigger problems like how are you going to pay for construction and where are you gonna put all 5 of your kayaks in that carport.

For the carport / pole barn you should be OK but no telling for sure. Prefab will need to be inspected. Slab or dirt floor. Slab would need inspecting I think. Is the company constructing it? If so they will have all the answers - even if they are not doing the build they should be able to help with permit info.

Bigfoot is right. You need drawings and permits for the the structure you are about to build. They will come inspect your footings, re-bar and j-bolts before you pour your foundation. Then you will probably have a rough framing/elec/plumbing inspection and then a final inspection.

As a Building Inspector myself, I would prescribe to the notion of calling your friendly building department to ask about what requires a permit and what type of inspections are needed for the type of permit desired... Depending on your location you may be under the purview of county ordinances which are typically less stringent than city ordinances...On the issue of the unpermitted carport..IMO its probably better to show the carport on your plans(listed as existing- with no mention of permit history) and go from there. if the inspector asks questions about it...then deal with it just as you explained earlier about your knowledge of it.

Selling kayaks to help finance. Two problems fixed at once! Biggest problem I have is a chicken coop that needs to be torn down and rebuilt. The coop has its own 10x10 slab that I need to bust out and move.  Prefab company is only selling me the wet stamped plans. The prefab installers don't do concrete so I will have to sub contract that myself. A 30 x 50 slab is bigger than I want to try myself.

Any cement contractors in Lodi area looking for a job?

I met this guy that came out to my Turlock house to give me a quote on some concrete. PM me if you want his number........inexpensive compared to the other contractors I met up with.
