Its funny that a sending unit's steel wire lever won't float without a floating device attached to the end of it. :smt011
Turns out that's precisely what went wrong with the sending unit on my truck.  Apparently the 101 gallons total of Biodiesel I ran through the truck back Nov, Dec 2007 caused my sending unit float to degrade to the point it finally disintegrated to the point of splitting in half and removing its self from the sending unit lever :smt013
The modules bottom (Where the fuel is picked up) has a very fine screen (Pre filter) which was gummed up with a gelatinous blob substance and torn.
It's nice having a functional fuel gauge again.  Using the trip odometer was getting old.

Wonder what it was in the bio that caused the breakdown.  I can understand the sludge but not the breakdown of the float.  Weird!

I knew from the truck site I frequently visit that biodiesel is a strong detergent, and will clean out fuel systems of deposits.  I had no idea that it would cause destruction to the fuel sending unit!   It can also damage rubber seals, like on the injectors!  First off I wasn't aware that the float I question would be a cheap plastic/styrefoamy material.  I expected it to be at least a brass float.  Not so.  Unfortunately the replacement sending unit is made up of the same crap.  However it should last awhile now as I plan to not run biodiesel again.
