Just hit it on monday and got a decent pull.
You need to be careful when launching and landing, due to the aggressive shore pound, and you also want to be weary of the current, because it can be fierce.

That being said, it is a great spot that can provide.
If you use caution and make sure that your gear is strapped down, and you have flotation, you should be fine.

Thanks for the tips, I guess I'll go scout it without gear first.

Yeah, what he said. Watch that shore break, it can be quite something.  And the current rips there, so you need good buoys.  None of that pool noodle crap, those will get pulled under during a big outgoing (I speak from experience here - had to wait out the tide and retrieve on slack once)

Got it...thanks. great thing about this site, all the experience out there and the willingness to share. Re buoys: my first time out in Tomales Bay had that experience on a big ebb as that current bangs on a big tide.

You can also launch up the road at China Beach -- there's a long, steep patch down to the beach but the break is more gradual and a little easier launch if there's a swell. I've had better luck at Baker but only tried China Beach once (a couple weeks ago).

As others say, watch the break at Baker -- it can f*** you up! Go on small swell days if you're not used to surf launches.

Anybody ever launch from the beach at crissy field? Looked like a long ways away that's why I bought an outboard to make the trip quick and easy. Im not really trying to launch my ship " Pro angler" in the surf. And if you have how long did it take you?

Marv "Shicken" has done it, but crossing the bar can be dangerous almost anytime in a small boat.

Mooch and I did this back in 2009.   You must be mindful of the tide/current direction and the wind.

Only do this if you have an outgoing tide to start, that will be bottoming within an hour or two of reaching baker beach - then ride the incoming tide back into the bay.

The paddle from Crissy field to Baker Beach can take about 40 minutes.
