Lake Oroville had special regulations (slot limit) for years. I'm sure there was a lot of research documenting how that effected fishing. As for tournie guys being upset that shouldn't be an issue. The different tournament orgs usually have a waiver from F&W since they release all the fish back into the lake. Spots certainly do make yummy fish tacos. At least the ones from Shasta do   :smt003

I fish for stripers off my yak mainly by dropping live minnows and throwing plugs in the North Delta.  Spots are everywhere, yes, but I don't think a relaxation on keeper size will make the populations of other fish rebound or a water way become more healthy.  Like some other dudes said, most guys who catch bass, with the exception of lakes like Shasta, throw them back no matter what size they are.  Meat hunters will always exist, but I think and stand pretty firm on the fact that bass clubs and tourney propaganda has eliminated the black bass species from ever being viewed as a fish family worthy of eating.  It's embedded in American angler culture that only "meathunters" and non sportsmen eat bass.

Personally, I don't want to keep 10" bass because they're a pain to fillet compared to a 14" or 16" and the system that I fish actually doesn't have too many undersized fish to where if I'm drifting minnows, I don't feel like I got ripped off by nature or the baitshop because hey, even if I don't get a striper, I at least can be pretty sure I'll go home with a bass or two that are 12"-18".

Bass are good table fare.  Largies can be good when they're pulled from cold water or have been eating nothing but shad, spots are mainly fish eaters that are cold water based and smallies are one of my favorite fishes to eat.  They're not too rare to encounter, but every smallie that I keep is killed quickly and I treat that meat with respect.  Ike Jimi it in the head, bleed it, ice it, make a damned good meal out of it to honor its removal of life from the system and feeding meand my friends.   :smt001

Thanks guys on the info. What I am going to propose is this: California, increase the bag to 10 and the no minimum size limit with a maximum length limit of 19".

From the info I've personally gathered that spots are now everywhere. from the rocky, fluctuating reservoirs where CDFG planted them to a massively increased current range that includes the reproductive range of threatened, native anadromous fishes. They outbreed and outfeed other black bass because they don't key on depth or structure.  They spawn from 2-30 feet. etc., etc., etc. It's either take it seriously, or face a lawsuit.

CDFW seems so Damn lazy that only a threat makes them take any seriously. If that.

Wish me luck fellas!
