Recently re-found my very first big camping knife, my dad gave me when I was 8 or 9 years old.  I remember ripping off wrapping paper (Can't recall if x-mass or B-day) and exposed a "Scout kit" it contained a canvas backpack, really small aluminum cook pot with lid, a metal canteen, with canvas holder, a utility belt that the canteen would hang from by the old WWII hooks? and this knife, an "Original bowie knife"  The I remember using the backpack for a book sack during high school and pretty much destroyed it, I've since lost the utility belt ( Looked like old WWII belt) and the canteen holder, still have the canteen buried in my shed somewhere, The sheath for the knife is gone, don't recall why, but Dad made the existing sheath (Pictured) during my Teen years. The knife and canteen are only things remaining from that "Kit"
I put the knife through hell.  It was a digging tool when me and dad when prospecting on the Yuba river, it pried many rocks, dug in sand, dirt, (Not much gold was had then)It was a weed extracting tool for a few years, Maybe many?)  Never really paid much attention to it after I got my Buck knife.
Not sure what I'll do with it, certainly wont be digging weeds with it again though.  Maybe it'll go back in the tub I found it in for a few more years.

that's a beauty! I have always liked the look of the stacked leather hilts.
& a custom sheath? That's just all kinds of awesome.

I remember my first "big guy" knife, I must've been about 8-9 years old. I lost it through some ice on the Kern river :smt009 during a trout fishing trip.

As a replacement though, I got a K-Bar sheath knife, with the same stacked leather handle as the knife you posted. That knife doesn't have the original blade profile anymore :smt005 but I still have it, tucked into the "collectible" knife case.

My first one was a Swiss Army knife I got on Christmas.  Proceeded to cut my hand open while trying to use it to separate GI Joe parts from those damn platic "trees" they came molded on.  I think I have mine tucked away in a momory box in the attic as well.

I say keep the knife.  Put it in a shadow box & hang it on the wall.

Oooh I'm not getting rid of anytime soon.  A shadow box is a good idea.  My wife is a fan of them, she's put together a few, one with some of my old navy items, one from our trip to Paris France,  and another one she put together with my Dads obsidian arrow heads displayed.
Over the years, I've had to twist the tang end down to keep the leather from coming undone.  I wonder if I loosen the tang (Back it off till it's flush with the thread ends) and then soak the leather to expand it to fill up the gap. Or simply cut the threads off flush and call it good?
I've had a few Swiss army knifes also.  My dad gave me one, it was stolen by a roommates brother, (Early 80's) my Mom brought me one home from Switzerland, in the mid 80's and I think that one was stolen as well.  It was a nice one, had a tiny magnifying lens that would burn really tiny holes into anything flammable with direct sun, tweezers, and a pick, along with all the usual items.
  I miss those knifes!

While I'm at it, this little Buck knife is my favorite trout slayer.  I keep it in my fishing gear. I remember it was the last thing I bought from the last ISE show I went to when it was still at San Mateo fairgrounds.  That show then, was back in the shows hayday, before it started it's downhill slide. Maybe  in the early 90's?
I have it big brother "The Huntsman" I think is call, it's my current camp knife. (6" blade)

Frame it, hang it and let the memories wash over you every time you look at it. I have my Dads Bolo and Butterfly Knives I think I'll do the same. Thanks for letting me remember mine. Frank
