good info for people who never fished for kokanee or inland salmon before.. also, i dont have a downrigger on my yak, so how would i go about getting a flasher and spoon trolled down at a deep depth to get in the fishes range?

Sliding bullet weights like my pictures above will get you down 10'-20' which is enough for the first part of the season. There are quite a few charts on line that will tell you what weight you need to reach a depth with 100' of line out.

Careful the more weight you add the easier it is to snarl the rig. I went out for a quick paddle at sunrise the other day trying to beat the storm and timed it perfect to get pounded by wind and waves and soaked by rain. The wind was forcing me to make some real quick turns and I believe during the turns I got the hootchie/dodger leaders twisted. First time I've had that happen but usually I'm able to make much more gradual turns.

Thanks for the write up Ricci. Very informative. I've never messed with this sort of fishing, so it's all new to me. Looking forward to messin' with something new tho.

What's everyone's take on colors? Do you guys choose color by depth? Time of year? I've heard New Melones was a "pink" lake while Camanchee was "green/chart". I've had great luck on New Melones with pink but a few weekends ago I barely scratched up one fish while everyone on the radio was ranting about all the kokes they were catching. I pulled up near the spillway and talked to some power boat guys and they said everything was hitting on orange and copper. Of course I did not have any orange or copper  After watching those YouTube videos and seeing the trout gorging on daphnia in the Pit River Arm I'm thinking early season orange/copper/gold/red is a good idea.
