I did not know that they could be vocal nor have yet to see a porcupine in California and lived here 40 years spending a lot of time in the woods. That was neat.

I've seen lots of porkies while out camping.  Mostly near wet, marsh areas.  They are very slow movers, noisy as heck when it's dark out and like to crawl up under the hood and chew on anything rubber, like radiator hoses.  They will eat the glue holding the laminates of a sheet of plywood too.  (Don't build a shelter out of plywood anywhere a porkie can get to it.)  They don't seem afraid of anything and kinda hard to chase off.  Use a stick.  A long stick!!

We used to put the fishing poles on the top of the car so they didn't chew on them. They are really a pain in the A$$. And tuff to kill. Don't hit them with your tires as well. And worst of all is keep your dog away from them. been there done that.
