Early out of Mitchell's .  630...straight out ~2 miles...big something (ling?) took line heavy and fast twice and holed itself...spent 30 mins paddling in every direction...should have waited longer to see if the creature would have come out...went into the kelp at natural bridges and caught a 21" black rockfish...good day.  Glassy afternoon.

Nice fish! What's it like launching a kayak from Mitchells? I've done a number of trips out of the harbor, but they are wanting $10. a day to launch a kayak. Figured there's gotta be a better way.

Yeah mon!  Mitchell's is easy...the waves slow down quite a bit at north end of the cove, there's a series of defeated jetties that make a nice mello pocket to pull the kayak in and hop onboard.  Watch out for getting slapped around by any reflected wash.  Beach launch is all about timing anyways.  The beach has flattened out for winter now too so that helps clear the summer kelp nonsense which can make launch and return interesting during the summer.

Congrats, thats 's the biggest black I've seen around SC! Yeah, probably a ling that broke you off. I got broke off yesterday in a similar fashion, but still landed two at 12# and 8#, and released a couple of other decent lings in the same area.
Hope to see you out there, Jim

Let's go fishin', and don't look back, cuz you'll never see a hearse with a kayak rack!

That's awesome!  Thanks Jim, first time I experienced a ling holing itself ...brought it up slow for maybe ten cranks after I set the hook and drag...then it took line like a halibut twice, I was thumbing the spool to slow it a bit more but then felt the most odd wiggling/ head shaking?  I assume it was the punk jamming itself into a crack.  Broke it off after paddling in circles. Good stuff...lots of fun.
