3rd Annual SF Baker Beach Crab Derby

Looking for something to do on opening day? Want it to be in a place with an epic backdrop, in one of California's oldest crabbing harbors? Then Baker Beach is the place to be on the 2nd on November!
The last two years have brought a mix of weather, which is to be expected in San Francisco, but they have also brought a great group of people together from all over to enjoy a speed-crabbing contest and crab boil on the beach.

This year the event day will look like this:

0700 - Crabber sign in begins
08:30 - Welcome talk from Kirk Lombard of SeaForager Seafood
09:00 - Official Launch (Competitors new to surf launching will be helped out by those accustomed to launching in surf)
12:30 - Weigh in with prizes to follow
12:30 to 4:00 - Crab Boil

The speed-crabbing event will put emphasis on line handling skills, bait and spot selection and paddling endurance.
Baker Beach offers up good crabbing, however, at times it can be a challenging launch, and is host to some strong currents.

Things to remember for participants:

wetsuits are recommended, fully rigged crab pots (hoops are the traps of choice, with buoy, rope and bait cage), crab gauge, time piece, and fishing license, food to share

Prizes:
So far first place will be taking away a fully rigged up danielson, with the runners up getting rigged up hoop traps.
There will also be prizes for the biggest single crab, biggest claw, and the ugliest crab.

There will be a station set up for boiling crabs, with a cook on hand. This is a pot luck, so bring something tasty to share! This event brings together people of all ages and backgrounds to share knowledge and experiences of this awesome local resource. Friends and family are encouraged to come for on shore support!

We look forward to another awesome event, see you there

Aloha

-SF Baker Beach Crab Derby Team

At least 20 crabbers in nearly as many boats are expected to brave Baker Beach  again this year! This speed crabbing event is likely as fast and dynamic as any around. The average soak on a hoop trap is only 10-20 minutes, and crabbers work up to 8 or more hoops at a time by kayak. Participants work the depths looking for clusters of the biggest crab and then pepper their favorite spots with short soaks.

This is a great local event that welcomes visitors from across the land. Its no secret that this historic and popular Dungee spot produces crab throughout the season for recreational and commercial fisherman alike. Visitors are not expected to give up their catch for the beachside feast, as there will be lots of day licensed fisherman to ferry out and Danielsons soaking to keep the harvest coming. It's always great to share the bounty with others... last year we had rangers eating crab.
Where ever you end up for the best 2 weeks of the crab season, lets get while the gettin's  good.

Super stoked about the derby, its looking like we have at least 14 teams, so the bounty should be plentiful!

We'll have some coffee and bagels on hand in the morning to help us wake up while we get the boats rigged and the traps baited. Coffee courtesy of Japonica, thanks Val!

forecast: Sat: NW winds 5 to 15 kt...increasing to 15 to 25 kt. Wind waves 3 to 5 ft. W swell 4 to 6 ft...increasing to 6 to 8 ft.

Not too shabby, see you guys there!

Thank you to everyone who came out saturday and helped make this another successful crab derby!

We had about 20 competitors who pulled in around 130# of dungee's with the a few #'s of red and brown rocks thrown in.

Congratulations to Brian Turner for winning this years event with a limit of 13lbs, 8ounces!
