Not sure I'm ready to brave Baker surf break on Saturday, thinking maybe Stinson is an easier launch for a relative newby like me.

Anyone know if that's a decent bet for crabing?

If you are not sure of your sea capability I suggest you drive a little north and meet us at Doran.  More guys to keep an eye on each other and possible crab donation for those that can't  quite limit out.  On the down low of course :smt044

Surf break could be just as bad at Stinson, but less so at Bolinas if you launch from the end of Wharf Road.  Last year for the opener I launched at Ft. Baker/Horseshoe Cove on the Marin side of GGB and headed out to Bonita Cove and got a few crab, as well as a 23" ling in my crab snare which I let go because I wasn't sure of minimum size  :smt009.  Tides aren't so hot for that launch this year though.  That's a nice beach to hang out at though in between soaks, so you should consider it on days with small tides.

It isn't legal to keep any fish caught in a crab pot or hoop.

Although now I'm guessing this isn't legal either, what about those snares (small cage for bait, about 4 small rings or snares) that you attach to the end of your line and use with a fishing rod?  That's what I caught it in.

I think the Regs 28.27(d) and 28.65 require a hook and line for Lingcod so, in my reading of the Regs, crab snares wouldn't work.

BTW, you got a keeper ling to get stuck in a crab snare? Nice work. I bet it was PISSED :smt044

I launched from Baker a few days ago to scope out some spots for crabbing and to do a little rockfishing.  Just launch with the tides and hope the swells aren't too big but bring a friend.  Easy peddle on a Hobie if you go with the tides.
