I was reading a thread that got highjacked to weather/swell info for Elk Weekend, but I can't find it now.  But this site looks like good info.  I know that I consult it regularly for Monterey area.  It's good in that it gives direction, ht and period, and can do that for multiple swell directions.

If you haven't studied up on swells, don't be fooled into thinking height is the biggest factor. Swell period is just as important, if not more so: just think of the energy that is released in a half-mile long 1 ft swell as compared to a 1/20th of a mile 10 ft swell when they hit shallow water and curl over.  Also, south swells tend to not only long-period swells, but there can be long lulls between sets, giving you a false sense of calmness if you just look at the water for 5 mins before going out.
On the other hand, once you're out of the breakers, long swells are much nicer on your stomach than short ones.
I wish I could join you in Elk, but we have a big family reunion/baby shower/anniversary/birthday function this weekend.
