Anyone ever tried this set up? My brother does this on his pickup with the hitch extender. I want to try it on my Jetta Wagon. It would be great to just slide my kayak into the car and keeping all the gear in-tact and not have to worry about all that setup time loading & unloading from the roof, loading & unloading gear to/from the kayak. What do you guys think? See attached.

It would work I guess.  Not sure if it would save a lot of setup time because, it would seem, to me, that you would need to keep your items from blowing/falling out & you will still have4 straps to deal with to keep it all intact.

There's a crazy lady at new melones everytime I go. She hauls her tarpon in a little Honda element that way. By crazy I mean nuckin futs. She got arrested for meth. They caught her after she deposited it in the ATM at the bank. Whoops wrong envelope.
So yes if your crazy enough it just might work.

All the water and sand/mud thats on the hull at the end of the day is gonna wind up in your car.  IMO, not worth the effort.
..........agarcia is just an ex-kayaker

Good point. hmmm. I think it's best to stick with the roof rack. Thanks for helping rule out that idea.

Dont load your yak in the car and deposit meth in the bank.

This sounds like a direct TV commercial....

As far as the loading and unloading on the roof will become second nature in no time. but if you did go the way of loading it in your car and the inside gets all dirty....meth will help with the clean up  :smt005 :smt002
I like to have fun.......

I made one for my truck back in the day.
Worked fine.
The problem I see with an SUV is the exhaust getting inside.
Definitely something to consider.

Also if someone were to hit your kayak the results could be ugly.

I have a Jetta wagon too and tow a Yakima Rack'n'roll trailer. works good.
