Made it to the water about 9am after fooling around deciding where to launch. Paid the $7  at Ocean cove (what a deal!) and actually started paddling about 10ish. I was so excited I let my new net in the car! Overcast, no wind and flat as can be.  A few powerboaters and a kayak ab diver at the cove.  Went straight out and met up with 2 kayakers from San Diego.  I headed north a bit and found a couple of humps about 30-50 feet. Fished deeper too, but NADA. Shallow seemed to be where the fish were. Shrimp files with squid and a blue/chrome bar on the bottom.  Marked some fish, but not many.  Ended the day with 6 rockies- 1 big blue, 2 china and 3 copper(same as gopher?).  Came back in about 12:30 as the wind started to pick up just a little.  I'm a newbie and was alone and didn't want to have any problems.  As I came back in the cove, there was a pretty big set of waves coming in so I decided to land backwards, which worked great.  Reading all the advice posted here by the vet kayakers really paid off. Thanks for all the help.  I hope to hook up with some of you in the future.  I attached two pics, hope they come through. The second one is my pup Sadie meeting her first rock fish!

I'm guessing you missed the bit about dressing for the water temperature and not the air temperature. Or was that picture taken after you got back and had already taken your wetsuit and a life jacket off, in which case I apologize for giving you a hard time?    Even so, if you haven't seen them already there are a few good posts on this forum regarding on safety equipment and well worth a newbies time to read them.

Oh, in case you're wondering, that's a gopher and not a copper.

Thanks for the help with the fish ID.  The pic I posted was the wrong one!  That's my son at Silver lake a month ago.  I wear a 3 mil farmer john with either under armor long sleeve or cotton long sleeve t shirt with a rain jacket over that.  Then my life jacket.  I'll try and post the right pics now... Going to Cabo on Sunday for a week.  Hope to hit Gorda Banks in a panga or cruiser and maybe some yak fishing towards the east cape.  Anyone know if there is any yak fishing guides or rentals  in San Jose Del Cabo?

Cute pics of your GF with the rockfish.  Somewhere I have a pic of my good friend, Sydney, inspecting a toothy, fat, lingcod for freshness and quality.  Whoever came up with "Man's best friend." got it sooo right.  Don't forget to save the scrap bits (cooked) for her - waste not want not.  Continued good luck on your next outing.

Sorry to give you a hard time, but you had me worried for a minute there. Sounds like you've got everything figured out.

Enjoy Baja, wish I could go back.  I can't help you on finding kayak rentals, we brought our own last year.

it sure seemed like a really unfishy weekend up north. i was at fort ross and it was bad. next time i go armed with a speargun and then i'll be ready to talk fish and abalone. i used plastics all day and caught a few fish but nothing big. they were all so full of baitfish i think.

I'm familiar with where stillwater cove is but where is ocean cove?   I was planning on trying stillwater cove Saturday for my first yak fishing voyage.   Steve

Ocean cove is a campground with a ramp right down to the water.  It is in the general vicinity of Stillwater; there is a gas station and store right at a 90 deg turn on Hwy 1.  If you hit Salt point, you have gone too far.  Just pay the 7 bucks for the day use and wheel your yak down the ramp.  As for what they were eating, all of my fish were puking up small crabs.  Saw a guy with a legal ling that was full of small squid.  I didn't see any baitfish at all on Monday.

Sorry about the pics; can't seem to figure out the new camera and software.  Just got the Olympus waterproof camera.  pretty cool!
