First, thanks again to Mike Giraudo, Matt Hoy, Dave(and dave jr.), Brian Carlson and of course Dylan and Robbie for making a day to remember. Started the day at 7 on our way to the Islands for some quality rock fishing. Loaded up on blues and Olives, but could not pick up the lings. This was not the big story however. On one of our drifts near the North end of the South island, my friend Brian snags what he thinks is the bottom. Next Dave snags the "bottom" . After a couple of minutes, both get free, but feels like they are dragging a big log. We were thinking ling or maybe halibut, but upcomes what looks like a big jelly fish followed by an estimated 18 ft white shark. Talk about a surprise. Mr Whitey was coming back for his dinner. The jellyfish turned out to be a large piece of a furbag(one for the good guys) and we were taking away his dinner. The shark came up to the boat and was within a couple of feet when it took the seal and thrashed at the surface. I am trying to post some pics, but in all the confusion, we did not get great shots. Looking at a monster shark face to face is needless to say amazing. This will be a day to remember. As fast as the shark came up, it was gone and we were left with jaws dropped and shaken. Thanks again Mike for a memorable trip.

Sounds like one of the other guys might be posting some better pics

We know the feeling, last week John Z and I were fishing rockies off the towers when he hooked what was probably a big old ling. Never saw the ling as it zipped under the boat right near the surface and a GWS grabbed it right at the side of the boat. I was peering into the water to figure out what the disturbance was all about and the shark came out of the water about 3 feet from my face. Needless to say it gave us a fright and a thrill. Of course it broke the line in a flash but John was hooked into the beast for a few seconds anyway. The shark made an encore appearance about 20-20 feet away then disappeard. Hope you got photos. It happened too fast for us to even think about the camera.
Imagine if that popped up next to your yak

The islands might make for some interesting fishing
