Hi,
I'm looking to make a few pokepole. Hardware stores around here don't sell them. If you have some, or know of a source around here (Union City/Fremont) , please let me know.

thx,
ernest

I was in the same boat as you.  I just couldn't find any bamboo in the diameter and length I needed around the hardware stores in my area either.  What I did was just rip the guides off an old 7' rod I don't use anymore.  I extended it about another foot using a thick gauge clothes hanger wire.  Ghetto I know, but it works!

Dont know about a source in your area... But if you want to swing by Saratoga, the Hakone Gardens sells all kinds of bamboo grown in their garden there.  Found two perfect long poles there, only charged me 8$ for both!

If you're ever in the SF area, go to Gus tackle in Balboa st. They have tons of bamboo poke pole for $10 I think. Also a good place to buy crabbing gears with different variety. Fishing tackles, not so.

Ernest,

Try http://www.hmbfishing.com/ Halfmoon Sportfishing.  They sell Calcutta bamboo the party boats use as gaffs.  20 ft lengths only but you can always cut it down.  They last forever.

Let me know if you find a good source. I could use a good poke pole and I need some thicker 8+' pieces for gardening projects. They also make great fishwackers

Thanks for the replies guys. I never knew it'd be so difficult to locate them. Kinda silly having to drive 30+ miles to buy a few sticks. I'll give those sources a call tomorrow.

thx,
ernest

I got a stack of dried trimmings from my bamboo patch from last winter.  Various sizes up to 30'.  Yours for the taking.
