Turns out I'm moving out in a few weeks to the east coast. Anyone have any tips on what to bring (minimal gear) and where to go/target? Will look into getting a yak over there, storing mine on this coast for the time being (year or two). Speaking of which, any suggestions which position is best for long term storage? I've heard to keep it on it's stern pointed up, leaning against a wall....

Having grown up in NE, I can tell you the fresh water fishing is off the hook, trout fishing in spring, followed by small mouth.  Stripers start running in the late spring.  flounder is always a good bet.  cod can be found off shore.  Shark fishing is always good.  bullhead, fishing can be good in the summer months as well.  Bluefish are a blast on light spinning tackle (10-20 lb test).  Clam digging can be done with bringing a Caterpillar back hoe to get to them.  Walleye, Pike, and pickerel can be good depending on where you go.  There are tons of easily accessible ponds, rivers and streams. A decent spinning rig, a 5-6 weight fly rod, will get you into a lot of fresh water.  Crossing a state line in MA is very easy so keep a map with you so you don't cross a boundry and end up in some one else DFG zone. Tons of coves and harbors in the Nor East, you will not get bored.

Never lived in Mass but I have lived in Jersey and Virginia. East coast has some great fishing!

The bluefish and stripers will keep you busy at Cape Cod. This video is Cape Cod Canal. Look how relaxed these guys are. Like just another day fishing on the bank...

I wish with every bone in my body that Ca had striper fishing like that. I talked to a few biologist that said with the amount of undersized and over limit fish being kept in the delta that stripers won't be around in decent numbers much longer

The striper migration back to the Chesapeake Bay starts in Sept. and runs through October. Great fishing off the beaches and the Cape Cod canal for both conventional and fly gear.
I grew up in Mass. on the South Coast, if you get down that way, PM me and I can give you some spots  from the canal down to Newport, RI.

I was at Plum Island, north or Ipswich a few weeks ago.  I saw  guys waiting on the beach for birds to gather.  When the birds  swarmed on baitfish right off the beach, the surface churned as  the stripers in amazing numbers came slashing thru them.  The guys then threw minnow imitations into bait ball and caught limits of large 20lb fish in a few minutes. This is a regular occurrence.  They don't even cast until they see this kind of action.  Apparently the same thing happens with bluefish.  Amazing.
