I've been fishing my aluminum skiff (no yak yet) in Santa Cruz but Monterey area is much closer. I've only been out of Monterey once and it was pretty rough that day.

I'm looking for advice on best times to go out of Monterey and what the conditions are usually like off the coast. I'm thinking early morning might be best but I know the fog is usually pretty thick around here in the AM.
Is there a weather pattern for most days? For example, Santa Cruz is usually calm in the morning and winds pick up in the afternoon. Santa Cruz does seem to be more protected than Monterey or Moss.

Also, where are some good spots to fish close to the harbor?

Thanks for any advice.

Monterey has some spots close to the harbor.  It all depends on what species you are after & the time of season.  Monterey, Capitola, S.C. & Moss all have places within a skiffs reach for rock fish.  Just be sure to check the weather/sea conditions first.  Work within your limits.
