So, had a really strange thing hapen this weekend.  I caught a smelt on a WM apex.
It was while i was waiting to put the downrigger down- thing was only about 7"

Other mismatchces:

salmon on a sabiki....ok it was only about 10" but it was a king (and yes it hit the fly)
salmon on a hairraiser - chuckE can vouch for this one.

I've caught jack smelt on a Rat'l trap when plugging for stripers in the bay.

Chuck I Think caught a smelt on a Diamond Jig.

If you want a deadly mooching rig for salmon, take the regular hook off a hairraiser, switch it to a circle hook.  Fillet of sardine or anchovie.  Deadly, deadly, deadly.  If the salmon were to come in to lindamar this year I was going to try it. Old timers swear by it but gave it up with regulations on hooks.

We used to thread sour punch straws (candy) similar to a plastic worm and run them like a soft jerkbait a foot under the surface for black bass.  Red worked the best.
