I'll get some shots of the compost separator I made to sort the worms & compost. (Small scale definitely)
Great info for the worm bin...awesome stuff, was curious on the seperator you use...was going to start a worm bin...and to get those little guys out with hurting them would be great....

Sorry I haven't posted any shots of my separator, I'm up in Portland OR. for another 2 weeks, so I won't be able post shots till then.  I can however try to describe it.
I took a regular 5 gal bucket, and cut it in half, then took the bottom section, ( The closed off end) and drew a line across the bottom across the middle.  I then removed half of the bottom (This is where I add the worm bedding)Removing a "D" out of the bottom basically.
Then, I got a dowel maybe 1" to 1.5" I used the dowel as an axle of sorts.  The upper section of the bucket and the lower section are separated about a foot, then I used 1/4" wire mesh to join the bucket pieces together creating the "Sieve" for the compost and eggs to fall through.
The dowel is suspended at both ends to allow the bucket to spin.
For a catchment bin I marked the radius of the top of the bucket onto the end of a blue plastic bin (Size is maybe 25qt?) I then cut out the radius and the upper bucket section fits pretty well into the cutout.  (I lowered the radius to remove about 2" to allow the top end to be lower that the end I feed the bedding into) the other end of the bin has a radius  cut into it to match the size of the bottom of the bucket.
Operation, start with the bucket bottom (The high end sitting on the bin) grab a hand full of worm's & bedding and place into the open end of the drum, and start rotating the drum by spinning the dowel.  As the drum is spun, the heave stuff will roll down the drum and the worm compost will sort through the screen into the bin, the heavy stuff will fall out the other end.  (Place another small catch bin at the opening) I continue spinning the drum and adding worm bedding until I've emptied the bedding.
Once I post shots, this post will make better sense! :smt044
