I will be camping in Big Sur this weekend with my Wife (yaker, but a non-fisherperson) and another couple.  If we can get away for a while, us guys would like to do some surf/shore fishing up there.  Anyone have any ideas or suggestions on where to go and what to use.  Are rockfish possible from the shore?  I will be camping at Fernwood Campground not far from the other Big Sur campgrounds.  Any help would be great.  Not bringing the yak this trip :sad10:.  I hear kayaking and fishing there is awesome.

Thanks,

Mike

Rockfish are very possible from shore.   There's a couple of popular spots near where you're going.  Partington Cove in Julia Pfiefer Burns SP and Sobranes Point just south of Garapata SP.  They are OK spots but I like to drive along 1 and look for spots because the really obvious shore spots seem fished out.

I like to use a 4-6 ounce sinker with a hook about 12-18 inches above it tied with a very short leader or attached directly to a loop.  Squid is the only bait I use there and bait-fishing is the only way I fish there.  Bring lots of sinkers and hooks!

Fishing is cool

For weights get the old fashing tea bags made of fabric. Fill them black sand or small rocks. If the bag snags on the rocks and you are using a heavy enough line you can tear the frabric. Saves you from retying the rig completely. Other option is that make weights with a flat surface like a circular wing. Those style weights fly up off the bottom in a hurry and help prevent snags while reeling in.
