Tandems are called divorce boats for a reason.  Just buy a second single seater and you can both have your own.

I bought a hobie oasis tandem last year so I could take my 7 yr old fishing w/o having to deal with paddling while learning to fish....awesome boat, super stable, mirage drives are amazing...I can pedal the boat solo with no problem...I can throw both my kids 4 & 7 yr olds in the front seat and I pedal them around on lakes and even the bay with no problems...the boat has rudder controls at both seats so anyone can control the boat, if required. I take the wife out for rides too and we haven't considered divorce yet...the mirage drives really take out the need to coordinate activity on the boat. Plus with turbo fins it really only requires one person to pedal. Hobies are truly expensive, but are a great product.

Haha, yup divorce boats. Last time we took a trip an rented yaks they told us they have singles or tandems. Tandems came with a free marriage counseling session after the trip.
