Me and a buddy took our drifters to Ft. Ross yesterday and had a beautiful day catching all kinds of fish.  When we got there we started fishing the north point and was pretty slow, I hooked a small ling and it got off.  Then my buddy caught a 8" ling (never saw one sooooo small)  and he also hooked into a small halibut.  Go figure, Rock fishing and he catches a flattie.  After an hour we decided to go south of the cove and we couldn't miss a thing.  We limited out with gophers, blues and a nice copper.  (NOt much on big size but a great dinner)   My friend hooked into a 28" ling and I caught a 22" Cab.  First time fishing the cove on my kayak and I can't wait to go back.

thanks for the great report! i love fishing that area. usually when i go out at fort ross i head straight out and just a bit north of the cove. its always fishy and even on rough days its always holding fish. i think we usually stay around 100 - 120 feet of water. its easy to get deep there.

i hope to go myself sometime soon!

I fished Fort Ross on Saturday afternoon for a couple of hours.  Took the wife and toddler out to the beach to escape the heat.  Got there at about 12:30 and saw many familiar faces packing up their kayaks and heading out already.  I fished from about 1:30 to 3:30 and the wind had picked up a bit, but I had a good couple hours of fishing even with the brisk drift.  Landed two lings in the 28" range, two nice vermillions, a toad of a copper, plus several blacks, blues, gophers, and a smaller copper.  All fish released.  Primarily fished the 65 to 90 foot range.

This year I've switched to 30# powerpro with a mono leader and I must say that I am sold.  Really allows you to fish deeper depths with less weight and the sensitivity is incredible.  I had a 25# leader, but will make the switch to 40# mono for the next trip.  Was pretty easy to break off 25# mono with the no-stretch main line.  In fact I broke off two jigs just setting the hook hard.

Beautiful weekend at the coast... hopefully the heat wave continues so I have another excuse to head for the coast next weekend.

Thanks for all the great advice and feedback that I see on this site.  I've been checking NCKA periodically and found this site to be a huge wealth of information.  I look forward to many more fishing trips on the kayak, and hopefully hooking up with some of the members to do some more great angling.

Hey George,

Looks like it worked out well, good job.  Still want to give it another try soon?  How does Saturday the 5th of August look for you?  Let me know, take care....
