Shag Slough

I went out today and got my first fish in my kayak. It was a smallmouth bass. I think I caught the same fish twice. The first time it got off the hook. I was using a black buzzbait fishing near where Shag meets Cache slough. Those were the only two bites I got all day. I am glad to get the skunk off.

Thanks. It's been a good weekend. I followed that up with winning a $250 Shimano bass rod at Guns Fishing and other stuff here in Vacaville. They had a special event with pros giving seminars and raffle prizes.

Thanks, good to know. I had read that the area was good for smallmouth so I didn't expect to catch a largemouth. What in the photo shows which it is?

This is exactly right.

The lateral black band on the side of the fish is the main thing. Smallmouth have no bands or horizontal bands. On the head of small and spotted bass there are three or so rays fanning out from the eye. Here is bass id page:
