Hi
I am looking for another handheld VHF radio as I unfortunately dropped my last one into the water (and it was not one that floats) while pulling my kayak out of the water on the Santa Cruz pier.  Thanks!!

That Standard Horizon, I think it is the HX 851, looks awesome.  Floats, 6 watts max power and it has a built in GPS, in case you need it to radio your position.  If I was buying a new radio it would be high on my list of considerations.

Cabelas has the HX150 for only 90$

Although you said you lost your last one because it didn't float, I would highly recommend tethering your VHF to your PFD instead of relying on it's ability to float.  During a capsize your vhf may still be floating, but maybe not anywhere near you.

Recently ordered from Cabelas the Uniden MHS 135 DSC Marine VHS handheld radio.  It usually retails for $250, however, currently is on sale for $150 & still is as of today, when I checked a few min ago.  Seems like a pretty good deal for what you get and is one of the few handheld radios having the DHS fx.  The DHS function will automatically broadcast your gps coordinates in event of emergency.  It has other specs that were best found by visiting both the Uniden Web site in addition to Cabelas which was a bit "wanting" in their description of the radio.  (unusual for Cabelas).  That said,  I think is a good price for what you get.

"Radio should be tethered to vest" X2!  Just because it floats doesn't mean you will be able to get to it in wind, waves, and current.
