I have been reading about lure retrievers. I see the pros and cons of the sliding weight and pole type retrievers. I imagine a pole retriever could be difficult to use from a kayak, especially in moving water. On the other hand it can be used to remove a lure stuck in a tree. I suppose it could also be made to double as a light pole / flag holder. I see there are also a great many different designs for the kind you put on your line and drop on to your lure. Does anyone have advice based on using a lure retriever from a kayak? Thanks ken

Are we talking about lure retrieving in freshwater? Wouldn't be worth it in salt. We usually just break it off. In freshwater, I use dog leash (the one that retracts) with retriever at the end of it. Get one that holds the most line. Those crank baits/A rigs add up.

Yes lakes or the delta. I saw a tip that said use a retractable clothesline reel. It holds 40 ft of line. What retriever do you use. I read about one called 44 mag and a pole type called the go get it. Another one that is home made. What do you use?

I don't know what it's called. Just picked it up from a random tackle store. Here's a pic from the Internet. But like I said, I use the retractable dog leash instead. Less mess/tangles that way.
40 ft of line? Isn't that too much? Usually, when bass fishing I fish in less than 20ft of water.

That looks like the same one. I don't know what length is right. That is just what was in the tip I read. 8 accessories under $30. All the way to the bottom of the page.

Here's the technique that has saved me more money in tackle than ANYTHING else...

1) When you feel tension that isn't a fish, DON'T YANK ON IT.

2) Paddle toward and past where you are snagged (no tension in line). Pull up the slack and give the rod a light jiggle.

3) If the light jiggle doesn't work, hold the rod tip high and pull slight tension, just enough to put a little bend in your rod. Grab the line just in front of your reel, pull it out about a foot or so, then let it "twang" back like a guitar string. The "twang" sends a shockwave of sorts down your line that will often free your hook. Try that a few times, then...

4) Wind down and pull on it from the opposite direction it was going when it snagged.

5) If that doesn't work, bust it off and move on.

I only fish the salt and my son had taken up spearfishing.  So when I get hung up shallow, I literally send him to free my jig.

Do you hook him on a pole or slide him down the line? :smt044
