With the wx report so far is anybody thinking about chasing salmon this weekend at shelter cove or trinidad?... Especially from the redding area if you would want to split fuel. :smt001

That's a toss up cause the Shelter Cove salmon bite can be hit and miss.  The Trinidad bite can be tough at times too.  If you want the for sure thing I would go out of the bar in Eureka, but that's a whole other ball game.

Save gas going to Trinidad or Eureka or better rockfish and bigger salmon in Shelter Cove.

Here's NWS forecast off Eureka:

.SAT...N WINDS 5 TO 15 KT. WAVES...NW 6 FT AT 8 SECONDS.
.SUN...NW WINDS 5 TO 15 KT. WAVES...NW 6 FT AT 9 SECONDS.
.MON...NW WINDS 5 TO 10 KT. WAVES...NW 6 FT AT 8 SECONDS.

Stormsurf shows pretty low swell through the period, and they call wind best Sunday.

The tides aren't ideal for a Humboldt Bay Bar run, but if the winds stay down I may paddle out on Sunday.

F   12     High   2:24 AM     6.1   5:56 AM    Rise 10:21 AM      11
    12      Low   9:00 AM     0.1   8:48 PM     Set 11:00 PM
    12     High   3:48 PM     5.9
    12      Low   9:25 PM     2.4

Sa  13     High   3:08 AM     5.7   5:57 AM    Rise 11:21 AM      18
    13      Low   9:34 AM     0.5   8:48 PM     Set 11:29 PM
    13     High   4:23 PM     6.1
    13      Low  10:19 PM     2.2

Su  14     High   4:01 AM     5.2   5:58 AM    Rise 12:23 PM      26
    14      Low  10:11 AM     1.0   8:47 PM     Set 12:00 PM
    14     High   5:02 PM     6.3
    14      Low  11:19 PM     1.9

You'd need mellow enough swell so the outgoing tide bar wasn't too nasty on your way out, and then you basically can't come in until the tide change - 10:11AM Sunday morning.  That's no problem if you're loving it out there on flat water paddling to the bite and back, but if it's nasty, windy, strong current, bite a long way off...  The bar is not a forgiving place.  I'd wait for better overall conditions if I were you, but, that said, the best/most consistent bite is off of Eureka.

I'd hit Shelter Cove if I were you - lots to fall back on and most likely to yield more fishable water.

I'll be looking to get out one day.  Maybe I'll see you.   :smt001

Thanks for the insight guys! I'm leaning more towards shelter cove now since the rockfish should be better in case the salmon bite goes bunk, it wouldn't hurt my feelings one bit to hit the rocks all day. Let me know which days you might be hitting the cove i'd love to fish with ya, I am leaning toward Sunday as it looks maybe slightly calmer but I am not certain yet.

Here is something to be aware of

source    http://www.times-standard.com/fishingthenorthcoast/ci_23640812/fishing-north-coast-rough-seas-or-not-salmon

"Weekend tides – Humboldt Bay For the anglers who aren't aware, there could be potential early morning hazardous bar conditions this weekend due to the combination of tides and swells converging at the time when most boats will be headed out the mouth of the harbor. Hard charging water flowing out of the bay and running straight into large swells can be extremely dangerous and you should always error on the side of caution — even if it means waiting until the out-flowing water from the bay has slowed, which usually occurs within 30 to 45 minutes prior to the tide bottoming out. If you're planning on hitting the bar at daylight, check the conditions first. To monitor the latest Humboldt bar conditions, visit: www.wrh.noaa.gov/eka/swan/"

I am hoping to go fishing out of Trinidad this weekend, but maybe for rockfish - well and to take my new FF out for the first time :).
