Ugly stick if on a budget. Pretty much standard issue on party boats.

If you want to spend a little more get the seeker 270-7 or calstar 270-7. The seeker has a softer tip and the caltar a little more lifting ability. If you are going to use it for mooching too, I would with the seeker. I have a Calstar 270-7 I can lend you if you want to check it out. If your trolling 2# balls, the rod of choice.

Thanks for all the replies!

Here's what I think I'm gonna do... I think I'm going to get a 2201 Tiger Stik for salmon trolling, and save my "extra" pennies for a nicer rockfish/ling/halibut rod that'll end up seeing a lot more use. I'm certainly no salmon expert. I think it'll be wise to start with a less expensive rod that'll work just fine until I've logged some more hours trolling, caught some fish, and formed my own opinions.

Thanks again!

See you guys out there.

-Alex

Picked up a 2201 Tiger Stik yesterday. Got it home and noticed a nasty sharp burr inside one of the guides. Looks like I gotta swap it out...

Glad I found it now instead of busting off a fish cause it tore up my line...

X2 you might even check out the calstar or seeker 196 7'. A little bit lighter action and IMO perfect for trolling with a 1# ball off the yak.

Alex, take a look at the Daiwa VIP. I just bought a couple of them that I planned on using for salmon fishing. I'll switch reel then use them for WSB this year. BTW, the rod is about $100 dollars.

Just following up on this thread for anyone who may dig it up later...

I ended up with the 1-piece 7', medium power Ugly Stick Tiger rod (2201 was the number I believe). The rod worked great for me the other day out in Bodega. It handled the 1.5-lb lead balls with ease, and felt nice while fighting that salmon. It's heavy as hell, but that isn't a big issue when it's spending most of the time in the rod holder.

I'd recommend it to anyone looking for an inexpensive but bombproof rod for salmon trolling, just as it was recommended to me.

Thanks again, guys.
